COMPETITIVE BIDDING

Competitive Bidding was voted into law as a part of the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003. The goal was to insist that Durable Medical Companies bid for Medicare contracts as a way to drive down the cost of equipment. Medicare had until 2008 to launch the project in 10 metropolitan areas. In September of 2007, Kansas City was selected to participate in the first round. Round one contract winners were announced in May and the project will begin on July 1st, 2008.

What does this mean to me as a referring agent?

  • It means that you must send your Medicare patients to a contracted provider for the products listed by category.

Can existing patients stay with a non-contracted provider?

  • Yes, except Enteral Nutrition and patients that need new CPAP supplies. All Enteral patients will have to find a new provider as of July 1, 2008 if they’re with company did not win a bid.

I don’t know some of these companies, who are they?

  • Several companies from other areas that do not do business in Kansas City bid and won contracts in Kansas City. Several local providers did not’t win bids and several out of state did win bids.

How long does the contract last?

  • Each contract will last 3 years.
